  The History of Kilcranny House

"In The Beginning"

In 1985 the seeds of Kilcranny House were sown. A small group of people volunteered their time and dedicated part of their life to developing the idea of having a residential centre which was based on a holistic approach to non-violence.

This idea was originally created by the "Peace People" from Belfast who wanted to create a centre to which they could bring groups of all ages and backgrounds. In this centre they would run programmes based around three core elements; work, recreation and discussion. Kilcranny House was born, and although set up as a separate legal and financial entity from the Peace People, it was one of their most successful projects.

The first five years of Kilcranny's life saw the renovation of the main house, the establishment of an organic garden, and the laying down of foundations for fundraising, administration, record keeping and group programmes. Kilcranny was run by international and local volunteers who were managed by a committee of people from a range of backgrounds.

In 1991, a Co-ordinator was employed to provide continuity and accountability, now needed more than ever as the popularity of Kilcranny House was growing. Two years later funding was secured to employ a Group Worker, who would attract a bigger diversity of groups and develop and deliver programmes to existing groups.

Over the next few years there was a steadily growing demand from groups interested in using Kilcranny House. This prompted the building of an impressive new accommodation block in 1994, sleeping 24 people. The decision to keep the number in each visiting group small was taken due to the nature of our work and the need to establish and build on trust with each individual group member when discussing the "differences" in our society. Kilcranny had always been conducive to this element of work due to its homely and safe atmosphere and we wanted this to continue.

In 1996 Kilcranny House decided to function independently from the Peace People and ended formal links with the organisation. In 2001 an administrator was appointed to cope with the ever-increasing paperwork

Today, Kilcranny House continues to grow and progress. The path is not easy. However, due to the dedication, commitment and determination of a wide range of people connected with Kilcranny House, we will continue to make a difference in Northern Ireland.
