Kilcranny House Ethnic Minority Support Project

(Translations available)

Kilcranny House Ethnic Minority Support Project

Aim: To empower migrant groups and the local communities to work together in creating a multicultural society within the Coleraine Borough.

The Coleraine Borough area is home to people from all over the world.  Increasingly, migrant workers are sought to take up employment in the Coleraine Borough area to sustain the economy in Northern Ireland.

However, there is limited support infrastructure in place to assist both well established and more recently arrived migrant groups to cope with the challenges posed by living in a foreign environment and/ or the challenges of becoming part of the wider community.

The project works in partnership with the local migrant communities, the Coleraine Multicultural Forum and other stakeholders in empowering ethnic minorities in the Borough.   The project will also engage with the local communities in celebrating cultural diversity and promoting cultural awareness.

The project is funded by the Community Relations Council through Measure 2.1 of Peace II extension.

The project will:

 ·        network with migrant groups

·        work with migrant groups in organising activities which are of interest to them

·        advocate for and provide support to migrant communities through our contacts with statutory authorities

·        provide the opportunities for local communities to learn and network with migrant communities and vice versa

·        incorporate cultural awareness as part of our community relations training.

·        provide race relations training to employers

·        provide signposting for migrant communities

·        promote cultural diversity and awareness through the Kilcranny House schools programme on education for mutual understanding and global citizenship

·        provide a mentoring/befriending scheme

·        support and help implement the Action Plan of Coleraine Multi-cultural Forum

·        liaise with other projects and statutory agencies

·        research into issues affecting migrant workers
