Volunteering at Kilcranny House
Kilcranny House was founded in 1985 through the
voluntary commitment of “ordinary” people to developing a holistic
approach towards healing the divisions within our society.
Kilcranny is comprised of a farmhouse set in roughly 4 acres of
land with an accommodation block, small scale Community Allotment
and Composting Schemes, organic gardens, and a stone built barn and
workshop. We have a small number of farm animals.
Situated in a peaceful rural area near the North Antrim coast
Kilcranny is a “safe” or “neutral” venue for meaningful discussion
around issues connected with community development, identity and difference, as
well as environmental awareness. Visiting groups come on both a daily and a
residential basis. Sometimes volunteers are involved in working directly with
the groups, other times their role focuses on hosting, i.e. welcoming, cooking
and cleaning.
Volunteers are actively involved in most aspects of the
Project; cooking and cleaning, devising and delivering programmes for school and
youth groups, working in the gardens or advising on the strategic development of
the centre
At Kilcranny we currently have 5 paid workers: A project
Co-ordinator, Schools and Community Liaison Worker, Ethnic Minorities Support
Worker, Administrator, and a Volunteer Co-ordinator. Usually two or three
residential volunteers live on site. We also have a number of local volunteers.
Volunteering
at Kilcranny enables volunteers to use their initiative, to be part of a team
and to make good use of their skills. It is an enjoyable and a worthwhile
experience, one that is mutually beneficial to the volunteer and to Kilcranny.
